.dat and .idx fixed filename extensions are too generic

It would be convenient to be able to change the filename extensions of the data and index files as an index creation time option. Alternatively, we could pick two extension names that are more unique and leave them fixed.

Either solution is fine with me. I prefer letting the user choose the filename at creation time.
