  MapServer? is old and bloated, and the scripting interface is crappy. I should know, since I was its maintainer for several years. PCL would benefit from a more modern and lightweight rendering engine. Cairo is the library on which we should build.

  GDAL and OGR are powerful, but their Python APIs are packaged improperly, depend on SWIG, and are awkward to use. A rewrite of cartography/data/disk.py as a C extension module using the GDAL/OGR C library would be a big improvement.
